Traumata and the representability of traumatic moments are recurring topics in the work of Craig Yu, who grew up in Hong Kong and Great Britain and currently lives in Chicago. Yu’s formally reduced works, which are mostly dominated by shades of black and grey, refer to actual events such as displacement, natural or chemical disasters, war or physical threat, which he translates into atmospheric images by deliberately staging formal clashes. By simultaneously reflecting the repulsion and attraction of disaster, his paintings exert a fascinating effect on the viewer and thus trigger a distinctly personal process of awareness.
