»Licht ist für alles Sichtbare verantwortlich, aber selbst nicht sichtbar.«
Brigitte Kowanz

Häusler Contemporary is pleased to present a survey exhibition Brigitte Kowanz. The internationally renowned Austrian artist just has been named representative of her country at the next Venice Art Biennial. In our show, selected works of the past 20 years visualize Kowanz’s multilayered approach to light and language. We thus provide viewers with the experience of her works’ radiance in the unique spatial atmosphere of «be».

With her genuine light works Brigitte Kowanz (*1957, Vienna) ranges among the major international artists of this domain. She visualizes light as an independent phenomenon that does not just illuminate, but that – similar to language – transfers information and generates meaning. Ever since the 1980s the artist has been combining light and language to create memorable pictorial formula. She uses both means likewise as medium, motif and metaphor in order to reveal the complex entanglements of vision and comprehension, of perception and cognition. For these achievements she was awarded the Grosser Österreichischer Staatspreis für Bildende Kunst (Grand Austrian State Prize of Fine Arts) in 2009 which has just been followed by another major appreciation: Kowanz was invited to show her work alongside Erwin Wurm in the Austrian Pavilion at the upcoming 57th Venice Biennial in 2017.
