New York based artist David Reed (*1946, San Diego) is one of today’s leading figures of abstract painting. His paintings constantly oscillate between an apparent three-dimensional spatiality and an unsettling materiality that is based in a conceptual understanding of different possibilities of abstraction. The examination of the diverse artistic tendencies that he came across in New York’s art scene of the ‘70s –Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Pop Art – is contained in his work, as is his enthusiasm for Baroque painting. The expressive gesture of Abstract Expressionism is transcended and combined with the continuing influence of New Media that alters our way of experiencing the world. It is the characteristics of the film screen, its way of lighting and coloring the image that Reed adopts and transfers to painting. In his works he aims for an intended disequilibrium rather than for a harmonious balance: »I want the last move, the last decision in the painting process, to appear as if it changed all the marks that came before, and I want the whole painting to become uncomfortable, dislocated, different.
