«Materials and mechanical procedures have enormous expressive (or subjective) potential.»
Gary Kuehn
Häusler Contemporary Munich is pleased to present an exhibition of Gary Kuehn’s «Black Paintings» that were last seen in a solo presentation in Europe almost 10 years ago. A major figure of post minimalism and process art, Kuehn started the «Black Paintings» in 1969. Just as his sculptures, these works are at once physical and metaphorical.
In 2014, Gary Kuehn’s (*1939, New Jersey) retrospective at Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein featured a wide range of his sculptures and drawings and visualized his remarkable contributions to art after 1960. Groundbreaking exhibitions of that time such as «Eccentric Abstraction» (1966) or «When Attitudes Become Form» (1969) in which Kuehn took part already suggested his importance.
We are pleased to now present a selection of early and recent pieces from Gary Kuehn’s major «Black Paintings» series that was last shown extensively in Europe in 2008.
