Curated by the Artist himself | Insights into Walking Art
We present Hamish Fulton (*1946), an artist whose multi-layered work uniquely explores the connection between man, nature and art. Known for his «walking art», which he develops through extensive hikes in remote landscapes, the act of walking becomes a creative process and artistic medium. Each of his works - from photographs, text works and wall sculptures to drawings - carries the memory of a specific hike in a specific geographical space and moment.
In our current Collector's Room, we are showing an exclusive selection of works that Hamish Fulton has curated especially for our rooms. Since the late 1960s, he has undertaken countless conceptual wanderings on all five continents, spanning an invisible web of footsteps across the earth. These journeys form the basis for his works, which are created from the records of his experiences. With concise statements or prosaic questions in his so-called «Walk Texts», which have been included in each of his works since the 1970s, Fulton provides access to his feelings, the details or climatic conditions during his hikes.
The selection for our presentation offers a deep insight into the poetic and spiritual dimensions of Fulton's journeys, which go far beyond the documentary. It takes us into the silence of nature, to the vastness of the unknown, and invites us to build a bridge between contemplation and our own memories.
With his works, Fulton invites us to experience the rhythm of walking and to reflect on the space we traverse. They are an invitation to slow down, to engage with our surroundings and to reflect on the diversity of the earth and man's relationship to it.
