Following the successful exhibition Gary Kuehn «Box Piece», we are pleased to present you with the recently published artist book on this important work.
The object «Box Piece» is part of Gary Kuehn's «Gesture Projects», which he began in the mid-1960s, and is understood as the artist's manifesto, which he archives in the specially made «box». In performative sequences, Kuehn tested the tension between spontaneous gesture and its «taming» in the limited field of the format, an artistic approach that was to become formative for the artist's work in terms of both form and content, which was already acknowledged by Harald Szeemann in 1969 in the legendary exhibition «When Attitudes Become Form».
Gary Kuehn's «Box Piece» is a solitaire and represents a key work in the artist's oeuvre. It combines 33 works on paper and 10 on canvas in a custom-made wooden box. The artist book with documentation of all individual works and historical illustrations was produced in collaboration with Gary Kuehn and the graphic designer Peter Zimmermann and was published in a limited edition.
