James Turrell is dedicating his whole artistic ouevre to the altercation of the phenomena of natural and artificial light. Installations and evironements make light sensible as a medium. Rooms are not lightned in an conventional way but filled with light and colour. The fascination and timelessness of James Turrell’s works is based on the fact that he has mastered to show the sensual qualities of light as a part of reality itself.
Piz Uter was erected next beside the Hotel Castell in Zuoz due to the initiative of the Bechtler foundation. The plain rotunda is a place of peace and of an intense encounter of nature and light. The series of the «Skyspaces» focusses on the coincidence of the architectural inner space and the natural outer space, whereas the sky is brought in through the opening of the ceiling. The impressive change of the sky and its colours can be experienced during the transition from day to night. It is best to allow some time to view the skyspace. We recommend to take between 30 and 40 minutes at dawn or at dusk to visit the Skyspace.
