It is our special pleasure to inform you about a milestone of one of the projects by James Turrell (*1943, Los Angeles, residing in Flagstaff, US), in collaboration with Häusler Contemporary: the installation of the light dome «Thought as Light,» in 2022 at the Klinikum Wahrendorff in Sehnde near Hannover.
In 2013, the LACMA in Los Angeles and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York dedicated unique solo exhibitions to James Turrell, which received great international attention. For this show, Turrell had transformed Frank Lloyd Wright's famous rotunda at the Guggenheim into one of his largest “perception spaces” to date by means of an elaborate construction. The Skylight «Thought as Light» in the Klinikum refers to this installation.
"Tailored to the specific needs of psychiatry and psychosomatics, as well as the requirements of the central dining hall, Turrell has created a light concept that intensely connects the experience of art with the therapeutic effects of light, color, and space," describes Dr. Marc Ziegenbein, Medical Director, and Chief Physician at the Klinikum Wahrendorff. Light and colors are relevant sensory perceptions that impact both physical and mental health. A targeted use of light and color in the design of the therapeutic environment can contribute, among other things, to increasing personal well-being, regulating inner drive, improving sleep quality and performance, establishing a natural sleep rhythm, developing healthy eating habits, sensitizing mindfulness, and strengthening interactions and social contacts.
