James Turrell
Skyspace «Sustenance» | Permanent Installation
University Children's Hospital Zurich (CH), 2024

After many years of intensive planning, the new University Children's Hospital Zurich opened in November 2024. At the center of the building is James Turrell's Skyspace «Sustenance» (2024) – a site-specific work of art that creates a space of light, tranquility, and contemplation for patients, their families, and staff. Häusler Contemporary is proud to have facilitated and supported this special collaboration between the artist and the University Children's Hospital.

The Skyspace «Sustenance» is a space in the shape of an elliptical cylinder that, in dry weather, offers a view of the sky through an oval opening in the ceiling. The space itself is illuminated by colored artificial light that changes color. The power of Turrell's light spaces lies in their ability to give people peace. The installations open the mind to contemplative observation, gradually putting viewers into a meditative state. The view of the sky through the opening in the ceiling even puts previously unquestionable truths such as «the sky is blue» into perspective. Because Skyspace «Sustenance» shows that the sky can have many different colors.

Up to 25 people can sit comfortably at the same time on the bench that surrounds the room, and there is space for a hospital bed in the middle of the room.

Opening hours: The Skyspace is not yet open to the public. We will be happy to inform you of any changes.
